| | | Description | Good afternoon wayzata, orono and long lake. i'm sun-sailor community editor jared huizenga. today is thursday, feb. 12, and here is what's going on in your area today.
today we'll be looking at some of the stories featured in this week's edition of the sun-sailor, which hits newsstands today.
• long lake fire department chief james van eyll appeared at the feb. 3 long lake city council meeting to deliver his first annual report since becoming the department's first full-time chief last winter.
van eyll noted that the department is generally "very young." currently there are 41 members between the two stations and 26 of them have fewer than five years of experience. but what they lack in experience they seem to make up for in eagerness. the department has added a number of training sessions, which are well attended by its members.
van eyll also said that calls for 2008 had dropped back down to 432 from 2007's 476 calls, which was an all-time high for the department.
• also included in this week's issue are stories by plymouth community editor sally thompson about the wayzata high school equestrian team and the upcoming joint performance of the wayzata high school chamber orchestra and concert choir, along with a number of community event photos by bill jones, our revamped community calendar, school news for both the wayzata and orono school districts and a sports update by sports editor nick clark.
• on our opinion page i had the chance to give my two cents on the debacle that is the signage along the new highway 12 heading toward orono and long lake.
this is a road that i'm all too familiar with, having traveled it regularly since starting at the sun-sailor in 2005. but in addition to that, highway 12 runs right into my hometown of ortonville, mn, meaning that every time my family and i made a trip to a twins game or i made a trip for a school-related function to minneapolis, i traveled highway 12.
but when i made my first nighttime trip to an orono city council meeting following the opening of the highway 12 bypass i almost zipped by the exit - even though i knew it was coming.
i now understand the frustration of the downtown business community and other members of the community that have voiced their displeasure.
but i also feel that pointing a finger at local officials for the problem is unjustified. the blame for the whole problem with signing should be placed squarely on the shoulders of mndot.
it's obviously a huge entity with a lot of red tape, but by not putting an obvious sign up that said something like "old highway 12 next exit" or "orono/long lake next exit" right away seems to lack common sense. at least that's my opinion.
the full versions of these stories, and a lot of others, can be found in today's issue of the sun-sailor and on our website mnsun.com.
• the hennepin county's sheriff's office has launched a new online television program to help track down the county's most-wanted felons. mnsun.com online editor greg huff filed this report:
before we go today, let's take another look at last weekend's chilly open on lake minnetonka. for wayzata today and mnsun.com, i'm jared huizenga and i'll see you tomorrow.
