 Description

In this segment, you'll see two early 20th century bronzeville landmarks that have survived all the teardowns. the green terra-cotta art deco building is currently the chicago public library's chicago bee branch; formerly it housed chicago's other black-owned newspaper (besides the defender). anthony overton, an early black cosmetics and hair care enterpreneur, built the beaux-arts brown brick and white terra cotta building as his company's headquarters. chicago's first black bank, binga bank, formerly stood at the northwest corner of 35th and state on the site of the iit research institute (the tall building north of the new homes under construction). the orange-brick school is named for crispus attucks, an early black revolutionary war hero.
