 Description

In the 1950's and '60's, the chicago housing authority (cha) created an almost continuous 4-mile long, two block wide high-rise ghetto from north of cermak rd.(22nd st.) to garfield blvd.(55th st.). over the last few years, the southernmost highrises, stateway gardens and robert taylor homes, have been turned into giant vacant lots. redevelopment is coming, slowly. luxury condos are pushing from the north, where the cha's hilliard homes have been rehabbed and turned into mixed-income buildings. in this drive south from roosevelt, you can see the close proximity of high and low-income areas on the near south side.
