riku and sora are the heros of light who are destined to fight the darkness. as time progresses on with riku and sora's friendship, riku starts to like sora more and more. when riku gives sora the paopu fruit, sora is confused at first considering how slow he is but eventually catches on. sora is confused about his feelings towards his best friend. when the darkness finally arrives at destiny islands and sora is trying to get riku to prepare for battle but sora's surprised by his reaction. riku tells sora that since he never responded to his question, he joined the dark side considering he had nothing to gain with the forces of light. soon after destiny islands had been taken over, sora set out to find riku and bring him back to the light side. several times sora encountered with riku on his quest, but each time riku tried to get rid of sora. down to the last resort, riku uses his strongest attack to finally get rid of sora once and for all. but only after sora confesses to riku does he attack because riku doesnt believe sora. only after riku's attack that stole sora of his heart, did riku finally lose his own heart because of the darkness in his heart thus the glowing. as sora is falling in the abyss of darkness, he sees the source of all the darkness. he attempts to close the door but cant by himself. just then riku appears on the other side of kingdom hearts and tells sora that he can close the door to darkness but while riku has to stay on the other side. as the door to kingdom hearts closes, riku tells sora he loves him too and to take care of himself. after the darkness had been locked away from wince it came with riku still deep within the bowls of the darkness, did riku promise to make his way back to sora and the others.
