| | | Description | This event, co-presented with the chess club and scholastic center of saint louis, invited visitors to watch and play live chess matches with grand masters from the u.s. women's chess championship (october 3-13). the defending u.s. women's champion and olympic gold medalist, anna zatonskih, kicked off the day by playing five players blindfolded. inspired by the contemporary's exhibition, this special day-long event celebrated the game that has puzzled players for centuries. spectators were welcome, and people could sign up to participate in a bounty blitz tournament or a simultaneous exhibition. hula chess, a variation of the game developed by jennifer shahade a writer, games player, and two-time american womens chess champion (2002, 2004) was installed in the courtyard for public play.
