The comparison between all weapons for having surveyor skill unequipped and having surveyor level 3 equipped. as you can see, all weapons have different ranges lock-on ranges. since a recent patch ny konami that is: changing the lock-on ranges for certain weapons. obviously the smgs and handguns have treated a lot better than the assault rifles when it comes to auto-aim.
if you ask me about using auto-aim, i only use auto-aim in two situations.
1. if i'm in the middle of battle, and i ran out of bullets for my primary weapon, i will switch to my handgun, and start auto-aiming.
2. if i'm playing as meryl and using here special desert eagle. i find it better to use auto-aim with the d.e. because it takes out a good chunk of your health if you're shot by it.
