mike brown, a 45-year veteran of the long lake fire department, was killed this morning in an accident involving multiple motorcycles near maple plain.
according to published reports, brown was riding with four other motorcycles when he was struck by a lone motorcycle driving aggressively from the other direction. that rider, whose name hasnt been released, was also killed.
long lake fire chief james van eyll said it was a very tough morning and that the department and community had lost a great asset.
he was great to work with and he loved the department, it was everything to him, van eyll said. its a huge loss for the department and for the community.
brown retired in april after 45 years of service to the department, including 20 as an officer. during that time he served as chief, assistant chief, captain and lieutenant.
even after his retirement, van eyll said brown wanted to stay involved with the department.
